Who we are
C Curtis Building Limited operates throughout Surrey and West Sussex.
The company has grown significantly, but our focus on working with, and delighting customers, is still at the heart of everything we do.
We work with architects to build bespoke new homes and renovate or extend existing dwellings. We work with interior designers to create beautifully finished rooms, often featuring bespoke joinery, and with landscape designers to develop practical and aesthetically pleasing outdoor spaces.
The beginning
Charlie Curtis first worked on a building site in 2008, at the age of 20. Initially he worked for his father and then went on to gain experience working for a number of local builders.
He loved the work and was motivated by the positive feedback he got from customers and his employers. However, as much as he loved being “on the tools” he knew, one day, he wanted the challenge of running his own business. It was only by managing a team of people he could deliver ever more complex, diverse and prestigious projects for customers.
He initially set up as a sole trader, trading as C Curtis Building, and managing a number of subcontractors. Each year the business grew steadily, purely through word of mouth. As turnover grew, and projects grew, the legal, financial and HR responsibilities grew too. Operating as a sole trader was no longer the most appropriate option.
C Curtis Building Ltd
In 2019, C Curtis Building Ltd was incorporated and the business started employing a core team recruited from the tried and tested subcontractors.
The challenge was to build a company that could retain the personal values of integrity and professionalism without Charlie being personally involved in all jobs on a daily basis. In order to do that he needed to find and develop the right people, who shared his values, and invest in the systems and processes that would enable the company to be even more efficient, effective, open and honest.
Dan Godden became a Projects Manager and shared the responsibility for overseeing projects . Charlie’s wife Fiona took on responsibility for managing the back office and external advisers were sought to provide advice on finance, health and safety, HR. Site managers were brought in to manage activities on a day to day basis on individual projects with the support of Charlie and Dan.
The present
On a typical day the company will have about 35 people working across four or five sites, and has an order book providing commitments stretching 18 months into the future.
Our order book has grown through referrals from existing projects. We are delighted that the order book reflects the belief that our customers have in us. It also means we can focus our attention on delivering current projects and finding even better ways of serving our customers.
The future
As a team we our proud of what we have achieved together.
We could have taken on many more projects but meeting existing commitments and stability is essential for us, our employees and our customers.
We will continue to grow but our priority is to ensure our growth is sustainable and we never lose focus on delivering excellence for our customers.
Our customers are proud of the homes we have worked with them to create, and we hope we will continue to delight customers for many more years.
“We found C Curtis Building through a recommendation from a friend and he has now completed two full renovations for us. They have a very clear and professional way of working and we knew on a weekly basis exactly where we were on every aspect of our budget so it was a very reassuring way of keeping track of the project costs.”
Pip and Mark Cliff
“the C Curtis Building team carried out a room by room renovation project on our 3 storey Victorian property over a period of 12 months. The works included new ceilings, plastering, electrics, refurbishment of sash windows, replacing sash windows, roof works, repointing, replacing floorboards, building wardrobes and bookcases and general painting and decorating. By the time we were ready to carry out our major project, the kitchen extension, we were in no doubt that there was no one else we would want to work with.”
